Abstract:

The Stonehenge Riverside Project (2003-2009) investigated Stonehenge in its wider archaeological context. This included excavations at the great henge of Durrington Walls and its satellite, Woodhenge, which uncovered remains of a large and well-preserved settlement before the henges were constructed. This settlement may have been used by the builders of Stonehenge during its second stage of construction.

This is the fourth of five volumes which present the results of analysis of finds from the settlement and the great henge of Durrington Walls and its satellite, Woodhenge. House floors, middens, pits and other features contained large quantities of ceramics, lithics and faunal remains which provide a remarkable insight into life at the time of Stonehenge around 2500 BC. The book includes geochemical and soil micromorphological analyses of house floors and middens and concludes with a chapter on the chronology of Durrington Walls and Woodhenge compared with Stonehenge and other ceremonial complexes.
