Eeuwige rust op de Donderberg

Saturday 17th of December two new Sidestone books were presented at the church in Rhenen on the Early Medieval Cemetery that was excavated there over 60 years ago.
The Cemetery of Rhenen is the largest and possibly richest Early Medieval cemetery of the Netherlands. Over 1100 graves were excavated containing 300 cremations, 820 inhumation and 14 inhumations of horses. The graves revealed over 3000 artefacts, currently in the collection of the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden, and include a rich collection of jewelry, beads, glass, ceramics, weapons, tools, and reused objects of Roman age.
These finds and their story have now been transformed into two books, one full catalogue of all graves and finds and a book aimed at the general public. Also an exhibition on the cemetery will be held at Museum Het Rondeel in Rhenen.
Saturday the 17th of December both books were presented at the Cunera church in Rhenen and the exhibition was opened at Museum Het Rondeel. (Co-)author Annette Wagner presented the first copy of the catalogue to prof. Clasina Isings and Sidestone co-founder Karsten Wentink presented the first copy of the “Eeuwige rust op de Donderberg” to the mayor of Rhenen, Joost van Oostrum. The exhibition was opened by the mayor of Rhenen and can be visited until mid-April at museum Het Rondeel in Rhenen (Kerkstraat 1).

Eeuwige rust op de Donderberg
Het rijengrafveld op de Donderberg bij Rhenen (provincie Utrecht) is de grootste, langst gebruikte en mogelijk rijkste vroegmiddeleeuwse begraafplaats van Nederland. Het bevatte ruim 1100 graven uit de vierde tot en met achtste eeuw na Chr.: circa 300 crematies, 820 lijkbegravingen en 14 paardengraven. Uit de grafkuilen zijn meer dan 3000 voorwerpen geborgen. e vormen opvallend rijke collecties sieraden, kralen, glaswerk, keramiek (meer dan 850 stuks), wapens, werktuigen en hergebruikt Romeins materiaal.

Das Gräberfeld auf dem Donderberg bei Rhenen: Katalog
Im Frühjahr 1951 berichteten alle Zeitungen in den Niederlanden von einer international bedeutenden archäologischen Entdeckung: der Ausgrabung eines großen frühmittelalterlichen Gräberfeldes bei Rhenen in der Provinz Utrecht. Das Reihengräberfeld auf dem Donderberg umfasste mehr als 1100 Gräber, die vom vierten bis zum achten Jahrhundert datieren. Circa 830 Gräber enthielten Beigaben, insgesamt 3000 Objekte: davon über 850 Keramikgefäße, Dutzende von Glasgefäßen, wie Becher und Schälchen, außerdem Hunderte von Objekten die den Kategorien Schmuck, Perlen, Waffen und Werkzeuge zuzuordnen sind.
